Eagles Go Defense Early and Offensive Upside Later in 2017 Draft The Eagles had themselves a solid draft in 2017, addressing needs on defense with their earlier picks and then weapons for second-year QB Carson Wentz to utilize and improve upon a so-so rookie campaign for the team. They took Tennessee defensive end Derek Barnett in the first round, who lacks the upside of other pass rushers in the draft but is as polished as any and should be able to contribute right away to a pass rush that sorely needs it. They took cornerbacks with their second and third round selections, including Sidney Jones from Washington who was possibly the highest-regarded corner in the entire draft before he tore his achilles at his school's pro day. That pick could pay big dividends in 2018 and beyond for the team. The back half of their draft consisted of picks to bolster their offensive firepower like receiver Mack Hollins out of UNC and Donnel Pumphrey out of San Diego State, who has the upside of a scatback in the mold of Darren Sproles, who Philly fans are very familiar with as he's still on the team. Be sure to check out this Eagles team on the rise in person this year with cheap, no fee tickets on TickPick!
Eagles Add New Weapons at Wide Receiver The Eagles look to build off last years season under second year quarterback Carson Wentz and make the playoffs for the first time since 2013. After releasing Defensive End Connor Barwin, the off-season addition of DE Chris Long was huge for Philly to add another pass rusher to the defensive side of the ball. The Eagles also signed Wide Receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith to help what has been a weak receiving core the past few seasons. The Eagles will open the season at division rival Washington, followed by a trip to Arrowhead to play the Chiefs, and then will return to Philadelphia for their home opener versus the Giants.
Eagles Put All of Their 2016 Draft Eggs in One Basket to Nab Franchise QB The Eagles' 2016 draft will essentially hinge solely on the success of first-round and number two overall pick Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State, an FCS powerhouse but one that didn't compete with any D-1 powers that America gets to watch on TV every week in the fall. The Eagles traded a bevy of draft picks to move up from number eight to two in order to take a franchise quarterback, and risky moves like this that don't pan out can set franchises back for years. Wentz has all of the requisite tools to become a top-tier quarterback in the NFL, but his competition level could prove to delay his timetable on when he will be expected to take the reigns as starter. They took center Isaac Seumalo out of Oregon State with their next pick in the third round to help stabilize the offensive line and provide depth and took running back Wendell Smallwood out of West Virginia with their next pick in the fifth to hopefully help fill the shoes of departed running back DeMarco Murray, who the team traded in the offseason to Tennessee. Naturally for a team that trades many of their picks to move up, this team didn't have the chance to make too many high draft picks that will provide an immediate impact this year. Philly fans should just be hoping for Wentz to make some strides as he gets up to NFL speed.
