About Lizzo

Lizzo (also known as Melissa Jefferson) grew up in Detroit, Michigan, after her birth in 1988. Her parents were members of a Pentecostal church, so gospel music was a large part of Lizzo’s early life.


Her music exposure grew to include R&B and hip-hop when she moved to Houston, Texas. She became interested in rap early on, creating raps and making groups with friends.


Lizzo’s journey included studying music at the University of Houston and performing on the side. She eventually stopped school to pursue music full-time. After the death of her father in 2010, she moved to Minneapolis to join the music scene there.


She connected with Prince, performing at some of his parties, and they collabed on his 2014 album Plectrumelectrum. The next year, she released her own album, Big Grrrl Small World, and signed with Atlantic Records. She moved to Los Angeles afterward.

In 2019, she released Cuz I Love You, where she showcased her vocal range. The album quickly found its way into Billboard’s top 10, and the tour for the album sold out. Afterward, “Truth Hurts” entered the top 10 after being featured in a movie.

Who Are Lizzo’s Musical Influences?

One of Lizzo’s formative musical influences came from the gospel music her parents listened to, along with Stevie Wonder and Elton John.


Destiny’s Child served as a notable R&B influence, and Lizzo has also listed Radiohead and rock music as influential. Her singing voice in the first progressive rock band she formed was influenced by Mars Volta.
