About Andrea Bocelli
Bocelli grew up in La Sterza in Tuscany, Italy, in the 1960s and became blind at the age of 12 from a soccer injury and congenital glaucoma. Although extremely talented on the piano, flute, and saxophone, Bocelli didn’t pursue music professionally until after he was 35. For several years, he worked as a lawyer and only played at shows to pay for his law degree.
After deciding to pursue music, Bocelli got the attention of Luciano Pavarotti with his recording of “Miserere” in 1992. With the famous tenor’s recommendation, the songwriters used both Pavarotti's and Bocelli’s voices. The song sold widely in Europe, and Bocelli competed in the Sanremo Festival a few years later in 1994. He won honors in the best newcomer category, and his subsequent albums gained critical and commercial success.
It wasn’t until 1999 that Bocelli became an international sensation with the release of Sogno. The album included one of his most famous songs, “The Prayer,” and included a beautiful duet with Celine Dion. Many successful albums followed this, including Cieli di Toscana and Amore.
Over his successful career, Bocelli didn’t just stick with classical and Italian music. He also collaborated with many popular artists like Jennifer Lopez, Nelly Furtado, Ana Maria Martinez, Ariana Grande, and Ed Sheeran.
Bocelli also sang the Lord’s Prayer during Pope Francis’ visit to the US. Bocelli talks a lot about his faith and his desire to pray together, and how he views singing as a form of prayer.
