Who Are Mötley Crüe?
Bassist Nikki Sixx founded the Mötley Crüe in January 1981, along with drummer Tommy Lee. The band called Royal Oak, Michigan, their home sweet home. Lead singer Vince Neil and lead guitarist Mick Mars soon joined the two to form the notorious quartet.
Through decades of music-making, the band has more than 100 million album copies sold across the globe and headlined venues like Wembley Stadium, Sun Bowl Stadium, the Fargodome, and more.
In 1981, Nikki Sixx started rehearsing with Tommy Lee and Greg Leon, a vocalist and guitarist. Lee and Leon played together in a band called Suite 19.
For a while, the three musicians practiced together, but Leon chose to leave. Soon afterward, Lee and Sixx auditioned Mick Mars. They searched for a lead vocalist as well, but Lee decided to ask an old high school peer, Vince Neil, to take the spot.
Lee knew Neil from their time at Royal Oak High School, and they performed together during school with various garage bands. When Lee approached Neil with this opportunity of a lifetime, he was already singing for a band called Rock Candy. After initially declining Mötley Crüe’s offer to take over vocals, Neil accepted because he wanted to try something new.
The Mötley Crüe released their first single, “Stick to Your Guns/Toast of the Town,” on their own record label Leathür Records shortly after hiring Allan Coffman as their manager. In the fall of 1981, they released their debut album, which sold 20,000 copies. They soon signed with Elektra Records in 1982 and re-released their debut album with additional edits by Roy Thomas Baker.
Now, the band has seven platinum and multi-platinum albums, 22 songs in the Top 40 Mainstream Rock hits, and six Top 20 pop singles. The stadium tour runs they’ve gone on have taken them everywhere from El Paso to Syracuse. They also have their own Netflix movie, Dirt, which is based on their autobiographical book of the same name.
What Does Mötley Crüe Mean?
Mick Mars wrote down the name Mottley Cru after hearing a band member of the White Horse describe themselves as a motley-looking group. The dots were added because the group wanted to give their name a European twist.
When Did Mötley Crüe Break Up?
Mötley Crüe broke up in 2014 after signing legally binding documents that prohibited future touring under their band name. And about a decade and a half before that, Vince Neil left the band, but he soon returned.
What Is Mötley Crüe’s Biggest Hit?
Some of Mötley Crüe’s best hits come out of Dr. Feelgood, with over six million copies sold. The album debuted in 1989, a few years after Nikki Sixx’s heroin overdose and Vince Neil’s car accident.
Dr. Feelgood is the band’s fifth album, and after its release, it claimed the number-one spot on the Billboard 200. The title track claimed the number six spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Other hit songs from Dr. Feelgood include “Kickstart My Heart” and “Without You.” Mötley Crüe also has 13 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with two top 10 hits. “Without You” peaked at number eight just two months after its debut.
“Smokin’ in the Boy’s Room” claimed the number 16 spot in 1985, and “Girls, Girls, Girls” claimed the number 12 spot in 1987. Additional albums from the band include Shout at the Devil and Theatre of Pain.
Does Mötley Crüe Have Awards?
Though unarguably one of the best rock bands around, the Mötley Crüe holds no Grammys. The group received three Grammy nominations for Best Hard Rock Performance for “Saints of Los Angeles,” “Kickstart My Heart,” and “Dr. Feelgood.”
They received an MTV Video Music Awards nomination for “Kickstart My Heart,” and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.
