After it hit Broadway, Sweeney Todd soon made waves, easily becoming one of the most beloved and famous musicals. Just three years later, in 1982, the musical was videotaped by Terry Hughes. 

Owing to the enduring powers of the musical, another Sweeney Todd movie debuted in 2007. The 2007 adaptation received similar success with director Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett. 

To date, Sweeney Todd has eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical and four Drama Desk Award nominations.
