Though many artists have delivered on their intent to release new music in 2020, some albums have been cast in a shadow of doubt since the novel coronavirus arrived, skewering several plans. Adele, who hasn’t released an album since 2016’s 25, was caught promising the arrival of her fourth studio album at a friend’s birthday party back in February—the before time.
But now, since the spread of the virus and the consequent quarantine, it seems that this plan has been derailed. When asked by a fan when the album is coming, Adele responds, to our dismay: “I honestly have no idea.”
Back in February, around the time Adele said her new album would arrive in September (this month), her longtime manager Jonathan Dickins added to the buzz, confirming that fans could indulge their excitement for a new Adele album in 2020. Opening up to the renowned trade magazine Music Week, Dickins explained, “[New music should be expected in 2020], and the sooner the better.“
Hammering in the bad news Adele flippantly delivered on social media regarding the uncertainty of album no. 4, Dickins also confirmed that the timeline for Adele’s new tunes has been delayed indefinitely. He recently told Music Week: “It isn’t coming in September, it’ll be ready when it’s ready. We’re all in the same boat, you’re doing stuff and then all of a sudden, the world stops. It’ll come when it’s ready. I can’t put a date on that yet. We have music, but we’re still working.”
In a response to this photo Adele posted back in June, a hopeful fan wondered if the post was meant to signify the imminent arrival of the new album. “Teaser? Albums coming out today???!!!! Tell me now!!!!” The photo is of Adele singing, more than a few ciders in. And perhaps we can chalk her response up to alcohol’s inhibiting affects. But Adele’s reply was pretty curt, disappointing, and definite.
“Of course it’s not. Corona ain’t over. I’m quarantining. Wear a mask and be patient.”
Even though we are fairly certain her new album isn’t arriving this month, the question remains: Will Adele Release Her New Album in 2020? Is Adele’s increased social media presence a sign of her quarantine boredom, or of exciting things to come? And where, oh goodness where, is that first single?
Now over a year ago, Adele was spotted at a New York drag bar in which she told the crowd “I’m out in New York, working”. This arrived right around the time (March, 2019) Adele was spotted by E! News photographers in New York, entering a recording studio. Adele’s last album, 25, was recorded largely at Electric Lady Studios. Though literally no one has spoken of Adele’s new music, what sound she is going for, who she is working with, the mere knowledge of her having set foot in the studios last year is a promise of ongoing creation.
Adele may not release her new album in 2020. In fact, we think it’s unlikely that the artist even wants the album to be tied to this abomination of a year. But, we do think it’s likely that before the year ends we’ll know when Adele’s highly anticipated fourth studio album will arrive. And even more likely is Adele dropping the first new single, hopefully sometime soon.
Fans are beyond curious and ecstatic to hear what Adele has been cooking up since 2016. It’s been a turbulent, dramatic, and rejuvenating four and a half years since fans last saw Adele. From ending her relationship with longtime partner—and father to her son—Simon Konecki, to sporting her healthier body, to showing fans that she really did take a whole year of “owning it” and “leaning into it all,” just like Adele said she would in last year’s birthday post.
What will fans see once Adele finally comes out her her cocoon? From what we can tell, there is going to be a lot of self-love and empowerment behind the tracks of Adele’s fourth studio album. We’ll be able to hear Adele feeling herself, the emotion of life moving on after tragedy and dissolution, the singer’s growth since we last saw her on stage in 2016.
Adele has always resonated as a singer wise beyond her years, her ballads of 25 drenched in their wont and lust, her voice one which speaks to multiple generations of families across the globe. And now, after so much has happened in both Adele’s world and ours, we anticipate a flood of beauty and truth pouring into her new album—a record for both floating and sinking.
Though Adele (most likely) won’t be releasing her new album in 2020, we know it will be one worth waiting for. We know it will immediately become timeless, just like her previous three studio records. We know we will devour it, hungrily.
And we know we can’t wait.
