About John Mayer
John Mayer grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Born in 1977, John Mayer developed an interest in music after watching Back to The Future. Michael J. Fox’s guitar in the movie impressed him, and he wanted to learn more. John Mayer’s early interest in music grew as he got older, causing him to enroll in the Berklee School of Music in 1997.
The singer later discontinued studies at the school with Clay Cook, with whom he began a group called LoFi Masters. Between 1998 and 2000, John Mayer gained a steady following after taking advantage of the internet to spread his music. At the 2000 SXSW Music Festival, John Mayer impressed some label representatives with his set list and later signed to Aware Records.
Since then, festival performances have included:
- Oceans Calling in Ocean City, Maryland
- Sound on Sound in Bridgeport's Seaside Park in Connecticut
John Mayer’s Come Up
John Mayer released his first album in 2001 called Room for Squares, which saw impressive success. The album’s lead songs included “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” “Why Georgia,” and “No Such Thing.” The album quickly went multi-platinum, sending him to Hollywood in Los Angeles for the Grammys. He won a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2003. John Mayer’s follow-up album Heavier Things saw similar reception with both critical and commercial success.
Heavier Things, while not as successful as Room for Squares, reached the top spots on the Billboard 200. “Daughters” earned the singer another Grammy for Song of the Year. The singer rose to stardom with a slew of Grammy Awards and stayed in the spotlight through the early 2010s with the release of Battle Studies and then stepped away for about a decade for personal reasons.
Mayer’s Musical Influences
Some of John Mayer’s musical influences include many music greats like Otis Rush, B.B. King, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Buddy Guy. As a kid, John Mayer also listened to Stevie Ray Vaughn, who made a big impression on him.
