It hasn’t even been two full years since The Weeknd dropped the critically acclaimed R&B/pop album Starboy, but the appearance of overwhelming evidence points to a new album being on the way. Just months after concluding the “Legend of the Fall” Tour, industry greats/artists in The Weeknd’s circle began talking Tesfaye’s forthcoming venture.
On Friday, March 2nd, Travis Scott took to Twitter to praise The Weeknd’s new album, a record which has yet to be officially announced. Scott referred to the album as “scray” and said it reminded him of first listening to Tesfaye.
Abel new album is scray. It’s like when I first heard him for the first time. Fuckkkkkk !!!!!

Travis Scott and The Weeknd have previously collaborated on “Pray 4 Love” and “Wonderful“, both of which have appeared on Scott’s records. We’re not sure if Scott was brought in to listen as a friend or if the duo has another fresh banger in the works. Only time will tell.
The Weeknd hasn’t confirmed his new project, but other signs point to there being new material from the famed Toronto artist in 2018. Besides the fact that Tesfaye has been releasing albums with no more than two years between them—which would suggest a new album arriving this year—The Weeknd is slated to appear at both Coachella and Lollapalooza. We doubt The Weeknd would act as headliner if he didn’t have any new material up his sleeve. Chances are, if there are new The Weeknd singles on the way, they will arrive before music festival season begins.
Shortly after The Weeknd was announced as a Lollapalooza headliner, TMZ reported having seen Tesfaye and a film crew in Taft, California. The Weeknd appeared to be filming a music video—or some other project that requires Tesfaye to ride a hover board. According to TMZ’s sources, the video is for an as yet unnamed new single, but this has yet to be supported otherwise.
Though all of this is mere speculation, we would be more surprised if The Weeknd didn’t release new music leading up to his festival headlining performances. Since the release of Starboy, The Weeknd has appeared on several other records, namely the TDE produced Black Panther: The Album. “Pray for Me“, which he sung alongside Kendrick Lamar, peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 chart.
We hope to have a new single from The Weeknd in the next coming months. But at the very least, The Weeknd’s first comic book for Marvel will be out on June 13th. The Weeknd Presents: Starboy Vol. 1 will focus on the city of Alphatron “in the grip of a crime wave, as the terrifying Jack “The Chef” Smiley has unified all criminal organizations with his ruthlessness and strategic genius,” according to a Marvel press release.
Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye joins a surprisingly large club of musicians who’ve penned comic books and expanded the reach of their artistic personas. We just hope Tesfaye’s growing number of projects doesn’t hinder him from dropping a new album—or at least a new single—sometime soon.
